About Erica Perkins

I had the great honour to be witness to the birth of my dear friend's daughter in 2001. Only six months later, a teenage women I was working with asked if I would be her labour support. Following that, my passion to support women and their families during their childbirth experience came to the forefront of my life.
In the few years after those births, I continued to work with young mothers in North Vancouver, but always kept an eye open for other opportunities to attend births. I learned about the Doula training at Douglas College about the same time that I became pregnant with our son and was so eager to learn all I could about pregnancy and childbirth that I relished the training I received.
The birth of my son was an amazing time; I have never felt so powerful and confident in my body as I did on the day my son was born. I surrounded myself with a few key supports, including my doula, and was able to birth my son without any medical interventions. It was the childbirth experience I had dreamed of. Two years later I was planning for the birth of our second child and made plans for a homebirth. Births often don't follow a planned course and mine was no different. Again, with as the loving support of my family, friends and doula that helped me to hold onto the strength I needed to deliver my daughter.
I am a certified Labour Support Doula with DONA International and a member of the
Doula Services Association of BC. I have also completed the Postpartum Doula training workshop at Douglas College.
I have been working as a Doula since 2005, but it was in 2007 when I made the final steps to starting my own business and becoming a certified Doula. Since then I have provided birth support to over thirty families.
My Birth Philosophy
I believe the birth experience is a profound event in a woman's life that not only affects her, but also her partner, their relationship and anyone honoured to be witness to it.
I believe women instinctively know how to birth their babies and that key factors in having a birth with no or little interventions is for women to be supported in their decisions, to trust their bodies, and to have limited distractions during their labour.
I believe that there is a time and place for the use of medical pain relief and interventions and women should be able to make informed decisions around the use of these.
I believe that my role as a doula also includes the care of the partner, and others involved in the birth; to see that they are involved throughout the birth process, understand what is happening, and know how to support the labouring woman.
I believe striving for a “natural birth” or using medical pain relief are personal decisions. It is my goal to help parents achieve the birth experience they are hoping for, whether that is a natural birth or a birth including the use of pain medication. The miracle of birth is not defined by the method; it is defined by the product…your baby!
